What is Delta-10 THC?
What is Delta-10 THC? It’s is about to hit hard and fast; so how is it we know so little about it? The truth is, we have always known it was there but because it occurs in such small quantities we haven’t paid that much attention to it. In fact, even the typical HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) analysis even confuses Δ10-THC for CBC or CBL. Very recently, Fusion Farms purified enough of the solid crystal to allow for further testing.
What kind of testing, exactly?
Obviously the standard HPLC was not going to cut it so they enlisted the help of Jonesing Labs LLC. They were able to begin the identification process by using 2D HPLC scans that show absorbance at multiple UV wavelengths. With this tool they were able to confirm the difference between Δ10 and the standard for CBC and CBL. Cool, right? But they didn’t stop there. Next, they used nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) which allowed them to look at the actual structure of a molecule. Coincidentally, a Delta-10 THC standard was released at the same time. Due the information collected by the mass spectrometer, 2D HPLC and NMR Jonesing Labs concluded that Fusion Farms had indeed isolated Delta-10 THC crystals. Now they only needed to replicate it.
How did they do it?
Throughout several tests, they discovered a number of food grade additives can be added to Δ9 THC to convert it into Delta-10 THC in small quantities. Delta-8 THC and Delta-9 THC, are essentially the same molecule but the location of the double bond is the difference between them (same goes for Delta 10-THC). Jonesing Labs assumed that the addition of a food grade radical initiator could help migrate the double bond of Δ9 to where the Delta 10 double bond is. Food grade radical initiator? Yep. like Benzoyl Peroxide used as a bleaching agent in flour. Under the right conditions and with the help of some other food grade components, the radicals are stabilized for a functioning reaction. And it worked!
Of course, Fusion Farms and Jonesing Labs have a patent pending so we’ll likely never get all the gory details. D10 has been slowly making it’s way out into the wide wide world and many companies are already manufacturing it. As predicted, you can find it in everything from D-10 vapes to tinctures.
What’s the big deal?
Well, one big deal is that it’s a legal euphoria inducing cannabinoid. Legal as long as it comes from hemp, that it is. You heard me! D10 is a synthesized form of THC so just like D9, there are some intoxicating effects that come along with it. They describe it as a Super Sativa that is uplifting with a feeling of focus and relaxation. The average D-10 on the market tests around 45-50% potency compared to its sister D-9. What’s the big deal? Another big deal is that because it’s a cannabinoid, you experience all the wonderful things associated with cannabinoids and their interaction with your homeostasis station.
